When you first start to learn the flute, you will be eager to learn as many things as possible. However, it necessitates that you know the proper way of practicing the flute and learn how the instrument works before attempting to play it.

This is why it’s crucial that you know the dos and donts of playing flute.

There are a lot of things to learn about the flute, but for now, you can start with these flute tips.

Let’s begin!

Do’s of Playing Flute

Playing a woodwind instrument like a flute can be a rewarding, therapeutic experience that can bring harmony and peace to one’s life. To ensure a positive experience when playing the flute, it is important to follow the dos of playing flute.

Practice Proper Breathing Techniques

Proper breathing techniques are an essential facet of any musical instrument, and playing the flute is no different. It is important to slow down and take some deep breaths to prepare. This will help to control and start the flow of air through the instrument in a calm and relaxed manner.

Keep Clean and Clear Tone

When learning to play the flute, you should always strive to keep the tone of your instrument clean and clear. To do this, there are a few dos that you should practice. You should regularly clean the inside of your flute to ensure that the signal remains uninterrupted.

Maintain Proper Posture

Proper posture is essential when playing the flute. The left hand should always support the flute by the barrel, and the right hand should support the head joint. To ensure good posture while playing, sit upright with the head in a relaxed position.

The arms should be comfortably relaxed, and the elbows should be kept slightly lower than the shoulders. Additionally, your feet should be flat on the floor, and the instrument should be pointed forwards and slightly elevated.

Don’ts of Playing Flute

When playing instruments, there are some simple ‘do nots’ to keep in mind. Keep on reading below:

Don’t Force Your Sound

Playing the flute should be a pleasant, enjoyable experience. Forcing the sound will produce an uncomfortable sound that can hurt the listeners’ ears or your own. To prevent this, one should practice proper breathing techniques and play with good posture.

Keep a steady, even breath. Don’t go too far with breathing and blowing. Overblowing will only result in an unpleasant sound.

Stay Away from Over-Embellishments

Over-embellishment is a common rookie mistake and often leads to chords or phrases that sound artificial and out of place. Instead, strive to make music that maintains the original feel, sound, and emotion of a song.

Be aware that even small, seemingly insignificant adjustments can change the overall sound of a song and make it sound jarring and awkward.

Refrain from Overplaying Your Flute

When you start to overplay, your flute will begin to sound shrill, and it can also strain your embouchure.

It is important to practice and strive for a good tone, but you must also take breaks and keep your playing within a comfortable range. Practicing too often can also lead to tiredness, which can lead to sloppy playing.

Start Playing Flute the Right Way

To ensure success when playing flute, remember the dos and don’ts: practice often, warm up before playing, stay properly hydrated, and be sure to take breaks. Don’t neglect proper posture; don’t rush, and don’t ignore maintenance.

Following these guidelines will help you become a well-rounded flutist.
